Dinner and auction raising funds to support victims of child abuse

Friends of the Cache County Children’s Justice Center are conducting their annual charity dinner and auction on Saturday, February 1. It will be held at the Riverwoods Conference Center starting with a social hour at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7.

Mike Stauffer, Childrens Justice Center director and retired Cache County Chief Deputy Sheriff, said on KVNU’s Crosstalk program Monday that the proceeds will go to support the work of investigating child abuse and treating its victims in Cache, Rich and Box Elder counties.

Stauffer said abused children appreciate the state owned justice center which look more like Grandma’s house than a government building.

“(There are) lots of teddy bears, very comfortable environment for children,” Stauffer said. “Kids are comfortable coming there.

“There they are interviewed by either a child abuse detective or a case worker from the Division of Child and Family Services that are trained particularly in the interviewing of children so the victims are not re-traumatized as they try to tell the story of what has happened to them.”

Stauffer said unfortunately the number of abused children has been going up and a total of 374 were treated at the Children’s Justice Center in 2013.
