LOGAN — Smithfield Fire Department will be testing new applicants tonight as they look to fill six-to-eight volunteer positions. The positions are unpaid. However, firefighters receive a small stipend for each call they respond to.
Battalion Chief Mike Weibel said no experience is required but all applicants will be tested on their strength and intelligence.
“First off, they have to be over 18 and they have to be in good shape,” said Weibel. “Firefighting is a very demanding job. It requires strength, it requires agility and that is actually part of our test.”
Weibel said department members will be trained as both firefighters and emergency medical technicians. They will also be trained as wild-land firefighters within two-years.
“This is an opportunity for our firefighters to give back to the community,” said Weibel. “We serve the community. It is a tremendous commitment that we ask of them.”
The tests start at 6 p.m. tonight at the Smithfield fire station, 325 West 100 North.
