LOGAN — Logan Canyon, US 89 reopened Monday after avalanches closed the canyon Sunday.
Skiers, snowboarders and others lined up along Canyon Road near First Dam as the Utah Highway Patrol waited for the okay to open the road.
UHP Sgt. Cade Brenchley said Utah Department of Transportation closed the canyon after several avalanches covered the roadway.
Brenchley said there were 11 avalanches in the canyon over the weekend. Five of those covered the roadway.
Liam Fitzgerald, manager of the Utah Department of Transportation Highway Avalanche Safety Program, toured the canyon on Sunday with Toby Weed, forecaster from the Utah Avalanche Center.
Fitzgerald said the threat of more avalanches was too high on Sunday.
Sunday’s closure came a day after an earlier set of avalanches in the same area closed the canyon Saturday morning for several hours.
The Utah Avalanche Center has issued an extreme warning, level five for the mountains of northern and central Utah, southeast Idaho, and western Uintas.
