Aggies spear Spartans in season-best performance on Alumni Night Friday

LOGAN, Utah – Shattering the previous season-best score with a 195.525, Utah State gymnastics topped San José State in dual-meet action Friday, six years to the day of the last win over the Spartans.

The Aggies’ strong performance made the numerous former gymnasts in town for Alumni Night proud.

Friday’s score set USU’s season high for the second-straight week, topping the 195.000 mark for the second time in as many meets. It is also the Aggies’ highest score since Feb. 23, 2007, when USU posted a 195.675 against Southern Utah. It is the 23rd highest score in program history, just missing the 195.550 mark that has been reached three times.

Utah State notched a 48.875 on vault, 48.675 on bars, a season-best 48.800 on beam and a 49.175 on floor, contributing to the 195.525 total. San José State finished with a 48.575 on vault, 48.675 on bars, 48.875 on beam and 48.975 on floor for a total of 195.100.

“It was definitely a good night. I’m happy that we held it together. It was great to see the girls become really fierce competitors,” said USU head coach Nadalie Walsh. “They’re starting to realize that they can really go after it. They don’t have to hold back because there’s nothing to be afraid of.”

Junior Sarah Landes represented the Aggies among the four all-around competitors, claiming her second-consecutive win with a 39.175. SJSU’s Cassandra Harrison finished second with a 39.050, Bekah Gher placed third with a 39.025 and Cami Guyer took fourth-place with a 37.700.

The Aggies dominated the leaderboards Friday night, claiming all of the available event titles. Sophomore Miranda Kerr was the vault winner, sticking a 9.825. Senior Paige Jones, freshman Bailey McIntire and Landes shared the third-place spot with a 9.775. USU swept the podium on bars with Jones claiming the title with a season-best 9.875. Sophomore JoAnna Cuba and freshman Charly Belliston placed second and third, each setting career-highs, with a 9.850 and 9.825, respectively.
