The high cost of roads has been plaguing the Cache County Council and the problem is not just local but all over the state of Utah. Utah Taxpayers Association Vice President Billy Hesterman acknowledged that on KVNU’s For the People program Tuesday.
Hesterman said various ideas have been looked at for transportation funding, including user fees. He also talked about another possible option.
“We’ve also investigated another option of doing what Oregon is looking at right now,” Hesterman explained. “They have a pilot program of charging people per mile that they travel.
“It would be just a cent-and-a-half per mile that they travel. That seems to be maybe the answer of what we look at in the future of how to tie road usage to paying for those roads.”
He said that per-mile traveled would be in lieu of a gas tax.
