Explosion at Autoliv facility

Smoke billowing from Autoliv building in Promontory, west of Brigham City.

A man was hospitalized Thursday afternoon, after an explosion and fire at an Autoliv building in Promontory, west of Brigham City.

Box Elder County Chief Deputy Dale Ward said two men were inside the building when the explosion occurred. One of the men, approximately 50-years-old, was burned and suffered injuries to the head. He was flown to McKay Dee Hospital by Lifeflight helicopter. His identity and condition have not been released.

The second individual was uninjured.

Ward said the building houses an incinerator to dispose of excess airbag materials. According to investigators, as the two men were removing one completed batch and preparing to put in a second batch, the explosion occurred.

Crews from Tremonton and ATK Thiokol reported to the fire. Due to the building being unsafe to enter, they contained the blaze and then allowed it to burn out. The cause of the fire is unknown.

Ward said no other facilities were threatened and the cause of the fire is unknown.
