Former Logan man pleads guilty to stealing cash from employer

Joseph T. Mahony, 21, pleaded guilty to theft, a class B misdemeanor, April 7, 2015.

LOGAN — A 21-year-old former Logan resident has pleaded guilty to stealing money from his employer and is now awaiting sentencing.

Joseph T. Mahony appeared in 1st District Court Tuesday morning accepting a plea deal to a lesser charge of theft, a class B misdemeanor.

State attorney Aaron Jossie said Mahony was employed at ICON Health and Fitness when he broke into the company’s cafeteria, stealing money from a cash register.

The theft occurred in November 2011. Surveillance camera footage recorded the incident and was used to identify Mahony.

Defense attorney Shannon Demler said Mahony has since been living in Fresno, California, and recently returned to resolve the charge. Two weeks ago he turned himself in and was booked into the Cache County Jail.

Demler said Mahony had hoped to be immediately sentenced so that he could begin serving his time.

Judge Brian Cannell declined, asking for a pre-sentence report to be completed first, showing Mahony’s criminal history. He ordered him to remain in jail until sentencing on May 12.

Judge Cannell said he may give Mahony credit for the time he serves before sentencing, depending upon the results of the report.
