LOGAN — A former director of the Whittier Community Center has pleaded guilty to stealing money and other items from the center while he was employed there.

Jon W. Alfred appeared in 1st District Court Monday morning accepting a plea deal from state prosecutors and attempting to pay back a portion of the money, allegedly stolen. The 39-year-old originally faced one count of unlawful dealing with property by a fiduciary, a second-degree felony.

State attorney Barbara Lachmar told the court Alfred was accused of using the center’s credit accounts to purchase various items. He would later return those items, keeping the money for personal use and online gaming.

He is also accused of purchasing electronics, videos and clothes that were not accounted for, and issuing a bonus payroll check to himself. He reportedly stole more than $17,761.

Under conditions of the agreement, Alfred’s charge was reduced to a class A misdemeanor if he paid the center back, the money that was taken.

While appearing in court Monday, Alfred gave two checks to prosecutors, totaling $14,800.

Lachmar noted that the checks did not equal a full restitution but said under conditions of the plea agreement, Alfred has until September to payback the rest.

Alfred was employed at the center from 2011 to 2014 before reportedly accepting a teaching position in Arizona. He is scheduled to be sentenced June 15 and could face up to one-year in jail.
