Logan exploring non-lethal options for urban deer herd

A growing problem not only in Logan but in other communities throughout Northern Utah is the problem of urban deer. On KVNU’s Speak to the Mayor program Wednesday, Logan Mayor Craig Petersen said although they are nice to look out the number of deer coming down in the foothills and below has been growing and urban deer have become a problem.

The mayor said the Logan City is looking at what other cities are doing and found that Highland has been trying an archery bow hunt and they have harvested about 120 deer through the program which is now in its second year.

”They put out kind of an RFP looking for highly qualified archers,” Petersen explained. “I think there were only four or five archers that were qualified to participate in the hunt. There are about 115 deer.

”The other approach is what has been done in Bountiful. That approach is to trap and release. They are into it about two years. They have caught and released about 200 deer. North Logan has also picked up on the Bountiful approach and they started about two months ago on the trap and release project. I think their number is 20 or 30 deer.”

Petersen says that plan is the one he favors becsause he personally sees the archery hunt as “too brutal.”
