Summerfest preparing for 2015 season with community art and volunteer opportunities

On June 18 the popular three-day Summerfest arts faire will open on the Logan Tabernacle grounds and executive director Elaine Thatcher says more than 100 talented artists from all over the country have had their booths reserved for some time.

Thatcher says each year the Summerfest committee awards a grant to a local artist who submts the best project to benefit the community and the 2015 grant recipient is an art graduate student at Utah State University.

“His name is Mikey Kettinger and he is going to do a project he has done before in another place. Down in Florida he has done it,” explains Thatcher. “He is going to create these artistic boxes where people can leave works of art.

“He will have art materials for them there where they can create something of their own, or go home and create it and leave it in the box.”

Thatcher says she is excited about Mikey’s Summerfest project because it reaches out into the community and encourages everyone to think of themselves as artists and share their creativity. She says the five boxes he installs at various places throughout the community will hold small pieces of art work that people want to give away.

Thatcher says there’s a lot to be done for Summerfest and volunteers are needed from now until the big event.

“You can do everything from just being a booth sitter when one of the artists needs to go take a break,” she continues. “You sit in their booth for a half-hour or so while they go off to get a little something to eat or whatever.

“So that is a fun volunteer job. Or there is more heavy lifting type of jobs, helping artists set up their booths or take them down.”

Thatcher says young men might be interested in doing some work for Summerfest that would help them get Eagle Scout awards. Those interested are invited to the Summerfest headuarters at 213-3858.
