Providence City is on its way to having a new city office building following a decision Tuesday that has been controversial. Mayor Don Calderwood has pushed for the new building saying the city had the money available and the building was badly needed.
Some members of the council, however, have said the existing building could be improved and that there are other needs for the city.
The vote ended in a tie which means the mayor has a vote. Mayor Calderwood was happy to cast that vote.
“Previously, the majority of council has voted to look at the building and then to look at a price on the building. Then the majority agreed to make him an offer on the building. Then they went and had an appraisal and had a commercial building inspection done on the building. The majority also approved funds from the 2015 budget to pay cash for the building.”
Now, the mayor says, the contract will be signed, some renovations will be made and then the existing building will go on sale.
