LOGAN — The Utah Highway Patrol is investigating whether distracted driving was the cause of a two-vehicle accident Friday night in Logan Canyon. The head-on collision killed a 23-year-old Kaysville woman and injured six others.

UHP Lt. Lee Perry said Tiffani R. Balling was driving a 2004 Subaru Impreza northbound on US 89, around 8:45 p.m. Near Beaver Creek, mile post 483, the car drifted into the southbound lane, hitting a 1993 Chevy Suburban head-on.

Balling was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers said two dogs were also inside the Impreza and may have taken Balling’s attention away from the road moments before the accident.

After hitting the Impreza, the Suburban rolled on its top, entrapping the 47-year-old driver, Peter B. Lindhardt and some of the other five occupants.

After being extricated by emergency medical crews, Lindhardt was flown by Air-Med helicopter to University Hospital in Salt Lake. He underwent surgery Saturday morning and is listed in stable condition.

Perry said Lindhardt’s wife and three teenage boys were transported by ambulance to Logan Regional Hospital in stable condition. A 22-year-old daughter was also transported by ambulance to Cache Valley Hospital in stable condition.

All six occupants in the Suburban were wearing seat belts.

The accident completely blocked both lanes of travel, backing up traffic for three-to-four miles. It was limited to one direction until early Saturday morning while troopers investigated and cleared the accident.

The crash is under investigation.
