Fire destroys hay barn in Franklin

Smoldering remains of a hay barn fire in Franklin, Idaho.

FRANKLIN, IDAHO — A fire late Tuesday night completely destroyed a hay barn south of Preston.

Franklin County Fire Marshall Scott Martin said district crews along with units from Lewiston responded to the dairy farm near 1093 North 1600 West, just after 9:30 p.m.

Seth Jensen works at the farm and said within five minutes the barn was fully engulfed in flames.

It was originally reported that animals were inside the barn but Jensen said none of the nearby dairy cows were harmed.

Martin said investigators believe the cause of the fire was spontaneous combustion inside the hay bales.

The barn housed approximately 55-tons of hay. Damage is estimated to be around $20,000.
