Musical forces combine to perform Carmina Burana

Just two weeks remain for the Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theatre Company’s 23rd season and founding director Michael Balllam says large crowds have been attending not only the four mainstage productions but some of the accompanying concerts and special performances as well.

Ballam says a highlight of the season comes on Wednesday, August 5 when Dr. Craig Jessop’s critically acclaimed American Festival Chorus teams up with the Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theatre’s orchestra in a performance of Carl Orff’s spectacular cantata Carmina Burana.

“It takes gigantic resources, which we have,” Ballam explains, “four amazing soloists, an antiphonal children’s choir, the full resources of our orchestra and of course the American Festival Chorus with their mighty sound.

“One doesn’t get many chances to hear the Carmina Burana. It will have supertitles so the audience will know everything that is being sung.”

Carmina Burana will be performed on Wednesday, August 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Ellen Eccles Theatre. Jessop says he is thrilled to be able to share this magnificent production with the community.
