Fire crews were called to a haystack fire Thursday morning, south of Newton that temporally blocked traffic along SR-23.
Newton Assistant Chief Greg Fabricius said crews from Newton, Clarkston and Trenton all responded to the fire near 400 West 300 South. A tender task force was also dispatched because of the close proximity of two additional haystacks.
Crews were able to secure a water supply connection from a nearby hydrant to attack the fire. The property owner also helped by moving additional hay bales away from the fire.
The fire was reported by a member of the Newton fire department who called county dispatch. Fabricius said early notification and a quick response helped save 75% of the 150 bales of hay.
A section of SR-23 was closed for 90-minutes while extinguished the fire.
