Sky View picks up 42-6 win against rival Logan

LOGAN – On Sky View’s first possession against Logan High Friday night, quarterback Garrison Beach took the snap from shotgun. He soon found a hole in the defense and without hesitation ran 31 yards into the end zone.

“The O-line just opened up a perfect hole,” Beach said. “I just got through it, made a good cut and was able to score.”

That was the beginning of a 42-6 merciless rout of the Bobcat’s cross-town rivals. Sky View scored four more offensive touchdowns throughout the game. Two came from running back Mason Tye, the other two were catches by wide receiver Bryce Mortenson. Beach credited the offensive success to his linemen.

“I had a really clean pocket tonight,” he said. “I couldn’t have asked for better protection. I had all day to throw, I felt like.”

The last Bobcat touchdown came on defense when Sky View senior Alex McRae forced a turnover by stripping the ball and returning it into the end zone.

“He saw it loose there, and he just ripped it out,” Sky View head coach Craig Anhder said. “Then he was able to scoop and score. Alex McRae, he’s a great athlete physically, but it is his mental game that’s so impressive.”

Sky View was recently moved up to the UHSAA 5A classification, but Logan plays at the 3A level. Bobcat senior Colton Durrant said he has looked forward to playing Logan every year and was worried they wouldn’t be scheduled his senior year.

“There’s nothing like playing Logan,” he said.

Anhder said he couldn’t help but smile when the game was over because of the happiness he felt for his players.

“This was important to these kids, and you could tell after the game,” Anhder said. “They were pleased, they had worked hard. They wanted this game, they wanted it bad..”

Sky View finished with more than 400 yards of total offense. The Grizzlies had trouble getting much of anything going on offense and were held to just 19 rushing yards.

“The stat guy yelled at me before we put the JV in, and I think they were at 1 yard (rushing),” Anhder said. “I believe that’s the key is stop the run and make their pass difficult.”

The only points from Logan came with 1:25 left in the game. Sophomore backup quarterback Robbie Ballam found Spencer Corbin in the end zone on a 33-yard touchdown pass.

The Bobcats improved to 2-0 and Logan fell to 1-1. Both teams will stay in the valley for next week’s games. Sky View will take on Highland at home and Logan will go to Hyrum to play against Mountain Crest.
