Kaneko powers Bears to first win

The Bears used the quick feet of junior running back Gage Kaneko to secure their first win of the season, 16-12 over Grantsville Friday in Garland.

Kaneko rushed for 133 yards and one score and the BR defense came up with two safeties to knock off Grantsville. The Bears moved to 1-3 on the year while Grantsville drops to 0-4.

After the game coach Chris Wise said he was pleased with how Kaneko ran. “That was the game plan going in. At halftime we knew we had to keep feeding the monster (Kaneko). I was very pleased with my offensive line.”

Bear River travels to Park City next Friday for a 3AA north region showdown with the Miners (2-2 overall). The Miners are averaging 38 points per game while the Bears are scoring almost 12 per game.

Wise didn’t know much about Park City other than they have had “a hot hand” for the last four weeks. “They have a coach . . . that I have a lot of respect for. He (Mike Shephard) knows how to win.”
