Hyrum woman accused of stealing from employers pleads guilty

Samantha K. Bybee, 30, charged with seven felony counts of theft and forgery, and four additional misdemeanors.  She is accused of stealing more than $50,000 from two of her previous employers.

LOGAN — A 30-year-old Hyrum woman has pleaded guilty to stealing almost $60,000 from two previous employers and could be sentenced to prison in October.

Samantha K. Bybee accepted a plea deal Tuesday morning, in 1st District Court. Under conditions of the agreement, she pleaded guilty to one charge of theft by deception, a second-degree felony, one charge of forgery, a third-degree felony, and two misdemeanors for exploitation of a vulnerable adult and unlawful use of a credit card. As part of the plea, prosecutors dropped the seven remaining charges.

Police said Bybee stole $50,000 from the law firm Bearson and Caldwell LLC, in February 2015, after she recently began working for them. Prosecutors said she forged her boss’s signature, cashing checks to herself.

After being terminated, Bybee was hired by Eaton Alliance, a company that helps adults with autism and developmental disabilities.

Police said shortly after being hired, Bybee took two patients’ credit cards and stole another $900. She was later arrested and remains in the Cache County Jail on a $22,500 bail.

Both employers claim Bybee falsified information on her resume and application.

Bybee will be sentenced October 27 and could face one-to-15-years in prison.
