HYRUM — A fire Wednesday morning caused a large amount of damage to a home at 413 West 300 North.

Hyrum City Fire Chief Kevin Maughan said the fire was reported at 8:15 a.m. and prompted multiple agencies to respond.

“When I got here we had smoke coming out of the west side of the building and up into the eaves, pushing up through the attic,” said Maughan. “We did a quick entry to make sure the homeowners were okay. Then we opened up the west wall and put the majority of the fire out and kept digging to find out the cause.”

The fire appeared to be located in the walls and ceiling on the west side of the home.

Initial reports were the home’s solar panels may have been struck by lightning, possibly sparking the fire. Maughan wasn’t sure, saying crews could not see obvious evidence inside the home’s circuit breaker box of an electrical short.

“All I can tell you is the electrical panel at first glance had no arching or burning marks in the house,” said Maughan. “So, I don’t know.”

Crews were cautious entering the home after the owner told crews, one of the rooms in the home was used to store ammunition and gun powder for reloading. Maughan said the fire though was located on the opposite side of the home and posed no danger.

State fire investigators are now determining the cause.
