Man sentenced to prison for stripping naked during traffic stop

LOGAN — A 46-year-old North Logan man was sentenced to zero-to-five-years in prison, after he reportedly stripped naked during a traffic stop in Hyde Park in August.

Joe E. Washington appeared in 1st District Court Monday afternoon. He had already pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, a second-degree felony and attempted lewdness by a sex offender a class A misdemeanor.

Police arrested Washington on August 1, after receiving a call, reporting he may be driving under the influence. While conducting the traffic stop, he reportedly stripped naked and ran around his vehicle. He later submitted to a breathalyzer test and was found to have a blood alcohol level above the state legal limit.

During sentencing, state attorney Spencer Walsh asked the court for the maximum sentence, saying Washington’s actions showed he was threat to the community.

Defense attorney Bryan Galloway said Washington is already in prison after being sentenced to 28-months, for violating his probation in a sex abuse case from 2003.

Judge Kevin Allen told Washington, his adult record was not good. He said he was glad to see he was getting counseling help in prison. He ordered the two sentences to run consecutively, saying it would be up to the prison parole board to determine when he is released.
