Sky View defeats Pleasant Grove 40-30 to advance in 5A football playoffs

Sky View took to the field Friday night in a highly anticipated playoff match-up against Pleasant Grove. The night was filled with excitement as both teams battled for a lead late into the fourth quarter. In the end, though, Sky View pulled away winning the game 40-30.

The game started off rough for Sky View as they gave up a touchdown in the first 20 seconds of the game on a slip screen to wideout Coleman Edwards for 60 yards. On the following drive, Garrison Beach started slow throwing a pick on Sky View’s first possession of the game. This led to a field goal giving Pleasant Grove an early 10 point lead. The first quarter ended with Sky View scoring the first touchdown of the night on a 1-yard quarterback keeper from Beach only to have their extra point blocked.

The second quarter saw Pleasant Grove return a punt 80 yards for a touchdown that probably should have been overturned due to a block in the back. It appeared the referee decided that a block was so far removed from the action of the play that it wouldn’t have made a difference, allowing for the play to stand. At the half the game stood Sky View 19 and Pleasant Grove 23.

Moving into the third, Sky View decided it was time to prove their undefeated record wasn’t a fluke. Stockton Boman acquired a pick on a tipped ball while Alex McRae had his second pick of the night, snatching a ball from the end zone killing a potential score for Pleasant Grove. Along with all that Colton Durrant blocked a field goal stopping Pleasant Grove yet again from acquiring points.

The fourth quarter ended up being Pleasant Grove’s downfall. While they were able to convert a 3rd and long due to a roughing the passer call, their quarterback, Isaac Hamilton, had to leave the game. Incumbent Bub Wilde was able to lead Pleasant Grove down the field for a late score to help pull the game within 3 points, but, unfortunately he too would be forced to leave the game after a big hit. Hamilton would return only to throw his fifth pick of the night, this time to Alex McRae for his third of the game. In the end, Sky View was able to run out the clock with their big running back Mason Tye.

Sky View will take on a 9-3 Herriman team that blew out Fremont 42-13. Sky View and Herriman are two of the top five teams in the state which should make for a fierce semifinal at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City.
