Bears win by 46 over Park City

Wednesday’s match up between Bear River and Park City had all the makings for a fun game, but the Bears were the ones having all the fun as they rolled to a relatively easy 79-33 win over the Miners (1-4).

It was the second game in two nights for the Bears (5-1), who also beat Ogden 67-57 on Tuesday.

“It was just what we needed. I thought Park City would give us a better game,” said coach Scott Hunt on 104.9 FM after the game. “(Park City) played really well against Skyline (earlier).”

Bear River opened up the game in a press and that pressure threw the Miners off their game. They committed several first quarter turnovers that led to easy buckets. Point guard Triston Hartfiel, who ended up with 12 points in the game, scored most of his baskets in the first half.

The Bear defense was so good that even when they dropped back into a zone and didn’t press, the Miners still threw the ball away. Up 41-10 at the half, there wasn’t much of a doubt who was going to win. The question was by how many points.

“It was a great team effort. It was fun to get some of the bench kids in tonight,” Hunt said. The veteran coach was able to empty the bench mid way through the third quarter. “We will have a tough game against Stansbury on Friday. It’s on our home court so it’s a game we should come out and play well in.”

Caleb Jensen paced the Bears with 16 points off the bench. Gunner Sorensen added 13 in typical Gunner Sorensen fashion; hard work and effort.

Of Sorensen, Hunt said, “Gunner is very athletic. He’s our tough guy on the floor. He’s a great young man.”

Friday’s game with Stansbury should be another good one – on paper. The two teams played last week, with the Bears winning 58-53.

After falling behind 28-23 and playing lackluster basketball in the first half, coach Hunt’s halftime speech worked again. Bear River outscored Ogden 21-6 in the third quarter on the way to a 67-57 win.

Mike Litchford scored 20 points, 14 in the second half, despite being in foul trouble again. Sophomore Jake Dahle had a season high 10 points for BR.
