Police arrest man suspected in early morning burglary

James Merritt, 32, arrested December 24, 2015, on suspicion of burglary, theft and assault.

LOGAN — North Park Police have arrested 32-year-old James Merritt. The Logan man is suspected of breaking into a home early Thursday morning and getting into a fight with the homeowner.

In a press release, North Park PD said officers responded to a home burglary in progress at 3:30 a.m. near 1306 East 2300 North. The homeowner had reported finding a man wearing a mask in his garage.

The two men reportedly got into an altercation and the suspect fled the scene. The homeowner was armed and fired into the ground to hasten the suspect’s retreat.

The release said the homeowner witnessed the suspect get into a Jeep and drive away, not before hitting a mailbox and damaging the vehicle.

Officers with the Logan City Police Department located a vehicle matching the Jeep’s description, 30-minutes later in the parking lot of a department store. They questioned Merritt and later arrested him. He is being held in the Cache County Jail on suspicion of burglary, theft and assault. Bail has been set at $17,430.00.

Formal charges are expected to be filed as an investigation continues.
