Small house fire under investigation in Smithfield

Fire crews were called to a small house fire Sunday morning at 105 West 200 North in Smithfield. It was reported at 10:26 a.m. by a caller who saw smoke coming from the upstairs of the home.

The first crews arriving on the scene requested additional fire units and reported significant smoke on the second floor.

Smithfield City Assistant Fire Chief Jeremy Hunt said firefighters entered the home and found a mattress on fire in an upstairs bedroom. The fire caused only a small amount of damage, estimated around $5000.

No one was injured in the blaze. Neighbors told fire crews the home is currently vacant.

Hunt said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
