The last six months have not been kind to chain stores in Cache Valley, and now a big box store is the latest to fold. Gold’s Gym closed. Golden Corral closed. Dunkin Donuts closed. Sports Authority closed. Pizza Factory closed. Paradise Bakery closed. And now, the Kmart in North Logan will be closing.
Sears Holdings Corporation, the parent company of Kmart, announced Wednesday that the department store at 1750 North Main will be shutting its doors in mid-April. Until then, the store will remain open for customers and will begin a liquidation sale on January 24.
“Store closures,” says Howard Riefs, Director of Corporate Communications for Sears Holdings, “are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model.”
When reached for comment, local store managers were directed not to give a statement. The North Logan location currently has 58 employees, most of which are part time or hourly. Riefs says all eligible employees will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at other Sears or Kmart stores.
Kmart stores are being shut down all over the country. Kmart stores in Pocatello, Idaho and Richfield, Utah are among the reportedly 22 stores being closed nationwide. More may be announced later this spring.
Kmart and Sears stores have been struggling over the last couple of years. In late 2011, Sears Holdings Company announced the shut down of more than 80 Kmart and Sears stores nationwide.
Riefs says Kmart will continue to work with customers who have current layaway contracts.
Customers can “1) pay off the contract early,” Riefs explains, “or 2) transfer their layaway contract to a neighboring store or online. This does entail cancelling the contract and re-creating it.”
He says the store will continue to communicate with layaway customers as they come in to make their payments.
The closest Kmart store to the North Logan location is at 2010 North Main in Layton. Additionally, there are five Kmart locations in the Salt Lake Valley.
