New Utah app designed to help students in crisis

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Utah students struggling with emotional or safety problems can now turn to a new app for help from crisis counselors or school staff.

Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes and Sen. Daniel Thatcher, R-West Valley, unveiled the SafeUT Mobile App along with education and psychiatric officials on Wednesday.

Students can use the app to call a crisis line, chat with a counselor or submit a tip.

Reyes says that suicide is the number one cause of death of Utah children ages 10 to 17, and he’s hoping the app can be a resource for kids in crisis.

Thatcher sponsored the bill that created the app, and says that he lost friends and classmates to suicide when he was young.

Students can download the app and get training on how to use the services at school.
