As governor, Weinholtz would expand Medicaid to assist Utah’s uninsured

Businessman Mike Weinholtz has announced that he is running for governor of Utah on the Democratic ticket.

On KVNU’s For the People program Thursday the candidate said Governor Gary Herbert is a good person but there are important things he would have done or would have done differently had he been in that position.

Weinholtz said the governor had the ability to expand Medicaid but he chose to pander to the legislature instead. Meanwhile, there are around 100,000 Utahns who have no medical insurance.

“It affects their lives in many, many ways because of the governor’s and legislature’s inability to expand Medicaid,” said Weinholtz. “He had the ability to do it.

“I’m sure he positioned it as wanting to be more collaborative, rather than just (being) unilateral. But in the mean time a hundred people or more have died each year the last four years because of lack of health insurance.”

Weinholtz also believes more could be done to improve the air in Utah.
