Curbside recycling may get scaled back in rural Cache County

A change could be coming in the rural recycling operation in Cache County. At Tuesday’s Logan City Council meeting, mayor Craig Petersen said the Community Bridge Initiative made a recommendation that involves the rural recycling program.

He said the group proposed that instead of picking up recycling waste twice a month in rural areas, it would be picked up once a month.

“We decided we’re going to act on that and create a pilot project,” Petersen described. “We will pick a part of the county, talk to the residents and just see how that works.

“If it works well, what it means is we send our trucks out half as often, we will save on fuel costs, we save on environmental pollution, and some of the evidence suggests that we’ll pick up the same amount of recycling.”

The mayor said evidence indicates that a relatively small number of people actually fill their cans every two weeks.
