Suicide prompts HAZMAT scare near downtown Logan

LOGAN — A potential HAZMAT situation blocked off a section of 100 West, between 700 North and 800 North in Logan, Tuesday afternoon.

Officers responded to an apartment in the area after a resident called 911, saying he was going to take his life.

Logan City Police Capt. Tyson Budge said when two officers entered the apartment they smelled what they thought was chemical fumes. They immediately exited the residence and HAZMAT crews were called to the scene.

Fire crews, wearing oxygen masks, later entered the apartment and located a male individual, dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound.

Budge said firemen later determined the chemical fumes officers reported smelling was actually gun smoke from a handgun.

Officers later entered the apartment and identified the victim. His identity is not being released, out of respect to his family.

The street was reopened around 3 p.m.
