Good Friday celebrated at Eccles Theatre with St. Matthew’s Passion by the American Festival Chorus

Good Friday in Cache Valley will be celebrated at the Ellen Eccles Theatre when Dr. Craig Jessop conducts the American Festival Chorus and Orchestra. They will be performing Johann Sebastian Bach’s revered sacred masterpiece St. Matthew Passion.

The concert starts at 7 p.m. Friday and another performance will be presented Saturday at 12 noon at the Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City.

Dr. Jessop says the American Festival Chorus and Orchestra, along with a stellar cast of soloists, the Utah State University Chamber Singers and the USU Women’s Choir, will perform the profoundly moving work.

“Hearing the St. Matthew Passion of Bach is like experiencing one of the great creations of religious art,” Jessop gushed. “It’s like looking at the great Pieta of Michelangelo, or the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican of Michelangelo. It’s just one of the monuments of the Western civilization and the Christian tradition.”

Dr. Jessop says St. Matthew Passion inspires audiences as it retells the compelling story of events leading up to the crucifixion of Christ.
