Cache County councilman recognized for his contributions to FFA

Congratulations were in order at Tuesday’s meeting of the Cache County Council for one of its members: David Erickson of Smithfield. Erickson became the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award at a recent convention of the Utah State Future Farmers of America convention.

Erickson directs the FFA chapter and teaches at Sky View High School and the school itself received the Superior Chapter Award, the Five Star Chapter Award and the 100 Percent Membership Award.

Erickson, who has been involved with FFA since 1986, says he doesn’t feel he should be honored himself, but instead the honor should go to the organization.

When Erickson talks about FFA he says he likes what he calls its three circle approach.

“They take what they learn from the classroom, they put it into practice so they’re taught about it, they’re taught in it,” says Erickson. “Then the FFA portion is the third circle and that ties them all together.

“They learn the leadership of agriculture, they learn the leadership of the community, and they learn the leadership of service. You put all three circles together and they get a balanced program that builds the youth.”

Erickson says through the FFA the students learn to compete in their skills and they learn to put their leadership skills into practice through a well-rounded approach.
