LOGAN, Utah. – Playing its first of seven-straight home games, Utah State fell to in-state rival Weber State, 3-2, at LaRee & LeGrand Johnson Field Wednesday afternoon.
Senior Noelle Johnson pitched the complete game for the Aggies Wednesday, throwing out five strikeouts and walking one batter while allowing seven hits. Senior outfielder Sarah Chow and junior catcher/designated player Sydney Hart led the Aggie offense, as each went 2-for-3 at the plate.
With the loss, Utah State falls to 19-20 on the season. Weber State improves to 28-14 in its final non-conference game of the season.
After a quiet first inning, the Aggies were first on the board in the bottom of the second. Back-to-back doubles from junior third baseman Victoria Saucedo and Hart gave the Aggies an early offensive surge, where Saucedo scored the first run of the day.
Utah State held that lead until the top of the fourth. The first Weber State runner reached base on a USU defensive error, later stealing second. After two strikeouts, the Wildcats added another runner on a single, scoring the batter from second to even the score.
With the game tied at one run apiece, the seventh inning proved to be a busy one for both teams. Despite a lead-off groundout, the Wildcats added two singles in a row, with both runners advancing on a throwing error by the Aggies. Returning to the top of the order, a triple to center field scored both runners and gave Weber State its first lead of the day.
Looking to answer the pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning, Utah State opened its half with two groundouts. Hart then singled up the middle, while junior Paxton Provost came in as a pinch hitter. Provost doubled to right center, scoring pinch runner Mia Maher all the way from first base. Freshman infielder Bailee Trapp then entered to pinch hit, drawing a walk, but the game came to an end as freshman catcher Bailey Lewis fouled out to the Weber State shortstop.
The Aggies’ homestand continues over the weekend as Utah State returns to Mountain West action against Boise State. With thunderstorms in the forecast, the Aggies and Broncos will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 22. A third game is tentatively scheduled for Noon on Sunday, April 24, but will be played as and when weather permits.
