Many Smithfield residents are more excited than usual about Smithfield’s 2016 Health Days celebration. Coordinator Richard Varela of the city’s recreation department says that is because after six years the popular Smithfield Health Days Parade is moving back to Main Street.
Residents and visitors alike have claimed things haven’t been the same since the parade was moved to give way to a major construction project. Varela says city employees and others have been working hard for several months to get Main Street ready.
For Varela, the reasons to bring the parade back to Main Street are not just for nostalgia.
“Also for me as a coordinator, it’s a safer event. The road’s a lot wider so you’re not worrying about going around turns, or kids running out into the street and getting caught under a wheel. It’s a lot safer for the patrons as a whole. That is one thing that always makes me feel a little bit better about it.”
This year’s Health Days Parade will be held on Saturday, May 14 at 10 a.m. on Smithfield’s Main Street and a large crowd is expected to be there.
Varela says Health Days opens on Monday, May 9th with a family bike ride at 5:30 p.m. and ends with fireworks at Forrester Acres on Saturday at dark.
In between, he says there will be a fun run, booths and activities in the park, childrens games, horse pull, concerts in the park and other activities. He says there are also several Health Days events during the week.
