Man sentenced to jail for beating roommate with baseball bat

Daniel Dau, 34, arrested Saturday morning and accused of beating roommate with a baseball bat.

LOGAN — A 34-year-old Logan man, Daniel Dau, was sentenced to jail Monday instead of prison, for beating his roommate with a baseball bat in March.

In April, Dau accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to aggravated assault, a second-degree felony. Under the agreement, prosecutors agreed to drop two remaining misdemeanor charges.

During sentencing in 1st District Court, Judge Thomas Willmore originally ordered Dau to serve one-to-15-years in prison but said he would stay that sentence if Dau completed the terms of his probation.

The probation conditions are that Dau complete 180-days in jail, being given credit for the 79-days he has already completed since being arrested. Judge Willmore also ordered him to complete an alcohol evaluation and treatment program, and write letters of apology to his roommates.

Judge Willmore threatened Dau, saying he would throw him in prison if there were anymore problems with him.

Early on the morning of March 5, police were called to Dau’s apartment near 200 W. 700 S. When they arrived on scene, they found the victim, a 36-year-old man bleeding from his head, lying in the roadway. He was treated and transported to Logan Regional Hospital with a fractured skull.

The victim and another witness told officers, Dau came home earlier in that night intoxicated. He went into his room and started playing loud music, waking up the other occupants of the home.

When they confronted Dau, asking him to turn down the music, he allegedly grabbed a baseball bat and began striking the victim in the head.

Police found Dau inside the home. They also found a baseball bat and blood inside the room where the assault took place.

Dau was later arrested and booked into the Cache County Jail, held on $22,000 bail.
