Charges filed and bail set for Smithfield man suspected of burglary and shooting outside LDS Church

LOGAN — Charges were filed against Jason Summers Monday, as the 30-year-old Smithfield man made his first appearance in 1st District Court.

Summers appeared by closed circuit video from the Cache County Jail as Judge Kevin Allen set bail at $150,000.

Police arrested Summers last Thursday night after a man called 911, claiming he was shot at while confronting a man, attempting to break into a Smithfield LDS Church near 400 N. 200 W.

When officers arrived on the scene and began searching the area, Summers exited a nearby home and began arguing with them. He was taken into custody and arrested. Police later searched the home and found a gun, believed to be the suspected firearm.

Police allege Summers broke a window at the church and was attempting to gain entry when the complainant caught him. He reportedly shot at the man before fleeing.

Summers claimed that the gun he fired was not dangerous because the round had salt loaded into it. Cache County Attorney Spencer Walsh disputed that claim, saying that the defendant’s actions were very dangerous.

Summers has been charged with aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony, possession of a firearm and discharging of a firearm, both third-degree felonies. He was also charged with five misdemeanors, four counts of drug possession and and one count of resisting arrest.

Judge Allen ordered Summers to appear again in court next Monday.
