Preston City Council members vote to create a new committee

Council members are all in when it comes to city spirit.

The Preston City Council met Monday and voted unanimously to create a Community Spirit Committee. Council member Allyson Wadsworth will head the group.

“What we’re wanting is more community involvement in the city,” Wadsworth said. “Any time you ask any body for involvement they’re usually more than ready to help. We have such a tight community any way, my goal is to just build on that.”

They also voted unanimously to donate $1,000 toward the Annual Preston City Amateur Golf Tournament that will be held in connection with the Famous Preston Night Rodeo that begins July 28.

The council agreed, in part, in an attempt to strengthen the city’s rec programs which council president Todd D. Thomas called, “park poor.” Thomas said that the city hopes by supporting the event, the tournament organizers will return the favor.

“In these next coming months,” Thomas said. “When we come to you and say, ‘Help us run these programs,’ I hope we get cooperation.”

Business licenses were approved and topics regarding water and sewer as well as planning and zoning for residential use were covered.

There is a public hearing scheduled for July 26 to discuss raising the water rate to repair damaged lines.
