Teens performing Bugsy Malone on Saturday

You might say Bugsy Malone’s associates will be taking over Cache Valley on Saturday, July 30 when 24 teenagers from Music Theatre West perform the musical at Mountain Crest High School at 4 p.m. and again at 7 p.m.

Music Theatre West Director Debbie Ditton says in the workshop production the talented young people have gone from audition to production in just two weeks. She says each member of the cast and crew has contributed to the show in unique ways. And she says the public will like what they see.

“Bugsy Malone is a musical adaptation of the movie Bugsy Malone that came out in 1976,” explains Ditton. “It starred Jodie Foster and Scott Baio when they were about 12, they were pre-teens.

“It’s about a mythical town where the kids run the town. You have two gangs, Fat Sam’s gang and Dandy Dan’s gang and they are out to rule the town. They have a weapon called a splurger. In the movie it was whipped cream and it froze the people that it hit.”

Ditton says not to worry, they will not be using whipped cream. She says the message of the show, and it is in the lyrics of the last number, is “it has been decided that we’re weaker divided, let friendship double up our powers.” Ditton says you can get more information by calling 232-3054.
