Deputies blitzing school zones as students return to schools

LOGAN — As kids go back to school, Cache County Sheriff’s deputies are increasing their patrols at school zones and crosswalks.

Lt. Mike Peterson said the two-day “blitz” is organized to raise safety awareness for both students and motorists.

“These blitzes are where we go out and sit at the designated crosswalks for the school zones,” explained Peterson. “We take deputies from all over our organization, from patrol, from civil, from investigations, from administration, and we go cover anywhere from 30 to 35 school zones for the first two days of school.”

The goal isn’t to increase enforcement, but to remind the public that the kids are back using crosswalks in schools zones and traffic is increased.

Peterson explained that the deputies will be at the school zones and crosswalks with their lights flashing through Thursday afternoon.

“We’ll get out. We’ll interact with the crossing guards, we’ll interact with the kids. It is just a great reminder to the public that we need to be cautious of what’s going on around them. Obey the school zone laws and allow these kids safe opportunities to go to and from school.”

Deputies will be transitioning back to an enforcement role after the blitz, where they will cite people for breaking speed limits and rules.
