PROVO – The Ridgeline football team improved to 1-1 and picked up its first victory in school history after a 28-13 victory over the Provo Bulldogs Friday night.
Quarterback Payton Thomas completed 11 of 17 passes for 139 yards and a touchdown in the win. The senior also picked up 42 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
The pass-heavy Bulldogs threw for 265 yards, but were only able to manage 61 yards rushing.
The RiverHawks took advantage of early Provo turnovers. The Bulldogs fumbled the ball on what seemed to be a promising opening drive. Ridgeline recovered the fumble, but was forced to punt after a three-and-out. The punt was dropped by the Bulldog returner and recovered by the RiverHawks, which set up a Thomas rushing touchdown a few plays later.
Provo had the opportunity to score later in the quarter, but the field goal attempt went wide left. Ridgeline jumped up 14-0 at the beginning of the second when Thomas’ sneak play from the goal line was successful.
Provo retaliated with a deep touchdown pass from quarterback Spencer Jorgensen to wide receiver Ty Jones to cut the RiverHawk lead to 14-7 before the half.
Both teams failed to put points on the board through the entire third quarter and more than half of the fourth. With less than six minutes on the clock, senior RiverHawk running back Cody Olsen leaped over the defense at the goal line to take a two-touchdown lead. Olsen finished the game with 20 carries for 87 yards.
Less than 40 seconds later, the Ridgeline defense got the ball back and Thomas’ pass found a wide open Sam Weda who ran into the endzone and put the game out of reach.
Provo was able to score off another pass to Jones in the final minutes, but the extra point was blocked and the following onside kick was unsuccessful.
Levani Damuni, a highly-recruited RiverHawk running back and linebacker, returned to the field after missing the first game due to injury. Damuni recorded two tackles, a sack and an interception.
Ridgeline will continue its season at home against the Spanish Fork Dons Friday September 2nd at 7 p.m.
