MILLVILLE – Ridgeline jumped out to early 22-point lead over Bear River and let the RiverHawk defense do the rest.
Quarterback Payton Thomas completed 10-of-13 passes for 99 yards in the 22-7 win. Levani Damuni ran eight times for 101 yards and two touchdowns while Olsen picked up 71 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.
It didn’t take long for Ridgeline to get on the scoreboard. On the first play from scrimmage Damuni broke through the defense and sprinted 80 yards into the endzone.
The Bears were able to pick up a first down after taking the field, but gave the ball back to RiverHawks when Oli Taylor forced a fumble that was recovered by Theron Wallentine. Catches by Wallentine and Nathan Oakden set up Damuni’s second touchdown, a one-yard run with 6:17 left in the first quarter.
Another mistake by the Bears set up another RiverHawk score. Ridgeline’s second-quarter punt was dropped and recovered by the Hawks on the Bear River 20. Olsen found the endzone on a 21-yard run a few plays later. Thomas completed a pass to Damuni on a fake field goal to take a 22-0 lead.
Bear River’s only score came later in the second quarter on a 71-yard pass from quarterback Kaygen Canfield to Zach Showell. It was the last time either team would put up points.
Bear River had other opportunities to score but fell short. A third quarter drive that took nearly nine minutes off the clock resulted in a missed field goal. A couple chances late in the game also came up short for the Bears.
Ridgeline improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in region. The team will continue its homestand next week against Tooele.
