Young girl dies in UTV accident near Paradise

A 10-year-girl died Sunday afternoon, after the utility terrain vehicle (UTV) she was riding in ran off the road and struck a trash dumpster east of Paradise.

Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Peterson said the girl was a passenger in a Polaris Ranger, riding with her 13-year-old brother, who was the driver. The UTV drove off the roadway near 1100 East 8600 South, striking the large dumpster that was on the side of the road.

Deputies believe the girl hit the dumpster when the passenger side of the UTV crashed into it. She was transported by ambulance to Logan Regional Hospital with a severe head injury and was pronounced dead just after arrival. The 13-year-old driver was not injured.

Peterson said deputies don’t think either of the kids were wearing helmets.

Sheriff’s deputies are not releasing the names of those involved, out of respect to the family.

Peterson stated that the accident is currently still under investigation by the Cache County Sheriff’s Office and the Utah Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred at approximately 3:35 p.m., just outside of Paradise city limits. Medical crews from the Paradise City Fire Department, Hyrum City Fire Department, and Logan City Fire Department were all paged to the crash.
