Providence accident sends three people to the hospital

A 26-year-old Logan woman and baby were hospitalized in critical condition after a three vehicle accident Thursday night in Providence.

Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Lee Perry said Norma A. Barriga was driving a Hyundai Sonata northbound on SR-165, attempting to turn left onto 1700 South, when she turned into the pathway of a Dodge pickup truck that was southbound. The Hyundai was broadsided on the passenger side and pushed into a third car that was waiting to turn right onto SR-165.

Barriga and the three-month-old baby were both taken by ambulance to Logan Regional Hospital. They were both later transferred to separate Salt Lake area hospitals.

Lee said both of them were seriously injured. “We are calling them extremely critical injuries. They are very serious life threatening injuries at this point.”

The driver of the pickup, 23-year-old Kaylee Hair, had several broken bones and lacerations. She was also hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Lee said all of occupants were wearing seat belts and the baby was in a rear facing car seat. Troopers are investigating though whether the car seat was being used correctly.

The accident occurred around 5:00 p.m. Witnesses said the traffic light was yellow at the time of the crash. Troopers believe Barriga failed to yield but are continuing to investigate.
