LOGAN, Utah – Through an offensive surge in the second half, Utah State soccer shutout Fresno State in a 4-0 home victory Friday.
Six different Utah State players contributed to the scoring Friday, with each goal coming from a different person and another adding an assist. Senior midfielder Jayne Robison-Merrill, junior forward Wesley Hamblin, junior defender Rachelle Warner and senior forward Jessica Brooksby all scored, with assists coming from Brooksby and freshman forward Alecia Robinson.
For Warner, it was her first-career goal, while the others continue to climb the record books. Brooksby now has 24 goals in her career, ranking fifth all-time at Utah State. Robison-Merrill and Hamblin are both on the edge of being ranked on the career record list, with 13 and 12 goals, respectively. Additionally, Brooksby now has eight assists on the year, which ranks third on the single-season assist list, while her 15 career assists tie for third-place all-time.
On the day, Utah State out-shot the Bulldogs, 15-6, including a 5-2 on-goal advantage. The Aggies earned their sixth shutout of the season, with redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Grace McGuire being credited with the win.
With the win, Utah State improves to 8-5-0 on the year, including a 4-1-0 Mountain West ledger. Fresno State falls to 6-6-1 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play.
The Aggies had control of the match early, dominating possession through the first half. Utah State took eight shots in the first 45 minutes, but was unable to score. Out of the break, Fresno State took back the offensive power. Over those first 70 minutes, both teams have several strong opportunities, but the opposing defenses continually shut down the chances.
After many near-misses, the Utah State offense found a groove, scoring first in the 72nd minute and going on to score all four goals of the day over a 10-minute stretch. Robison-Merrill was the first to strike and put the Aggies on the board. After Hamblin drew a foul off Fresno State, Brooksby took a free kick just outside of the penalty box. It crossed in to find the foot of Robison-Merrill who got it across the line.
Three minutes later, Brooksby again provided the opportunity for a score, as she crossed the ball over the box to Hamblin who put it in the net. Warner was next to strike, as she dribbled through the Fresno State defense and crossed the ball past the keeper for an unassisted goal in the 77th minute. With the final goal of the day, Brooksby got on the board in the 80th minute. After receiving a pass from Robinson, she got control and beat out the Bulldog goalkeeper to find the back of the net.
Utah State remains at home for the weekend, hosting San José State on Sunday, Oct. 9. The Aggies and Spartans will battle at Chuck & Gloria Bell Field at 1 p.m.
