On Friday, Cache County Republican Party Chair Boyd Pugmire criticized those who identify themselves as Republican, yet plan to vote for independent Presidential candidate Evan McMullin.
Pugmire said it would be a mistake to vote for McMullin and said any Republican voters who mark McMullin on their ballots should leave the GOP.
“A vote for McMullin is a vote for Hillary Clinton,” Pugmire said on Friday. “I don’t know how many times that needs to be said. It’s only going to come down to one or two people winning the presidency.
“If anyone even considers themselves a Republican, and does anything to benefit Hillary Clinton, as far as I’m concerned they shouldn’t even be in the Republican Party.”
Sunday, Pugmire issued a statement to clarify those comments.
”While my intent was to express that Republicans who are trying to help Hillary Clinton win should not be in the party, I realize that in my frustration and in the context of the rest of the story it seemed directed at all people who cast a vote for Evan McMullin.
”I apologize for the overly broad criticism and want to assure all Republicans of their importance to the party and look ahead to achieving our larger purposes after this tough election season is over.”
