New coaches announced for Sky View and Green Canyon high schools

Both Sky View and Green Canyon high schools on Thursday announced coaches for their various athletic and activity programs for the upcoming season. Perhaps the biggest announcement revealed is who the head football coach for Sky View will be and who will be the head basketball coach for Green Canyon. The schools also announced opportunities to meet all the new coaches at an upcoming event.

Sky View Football

According to Mike Monson, principal at Sky View High School, former Utah State Aggie football player Danilo Robinson will be the next head coach for the Bobcats.

Robinson played on the Aggie defensive line during the 1993-96 football seasons. Robinson later had two stints on the USU coaching staff: as a strength and conditioning coach in 1997, as a tight ends coach in 2005 and as a defensive line coach from 2006-2008.

In 2002 Robinson was the defensive and offensive line coach for Northview High School in California before being promoted to head coach in 2003. However, Robinson returned to coaching at the collegiate level before he ever had the opportunity to coach a game.

Robinson has also coached at Louisiana-Monroe, Navy, Wyoming, Army and is currently the Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Line coach at Kentucky State University under former USU head coach John L. Smith.

It has been known for some time that Craig Anhder would be moving from the Sky View Bobcats to the new Green Canyon Wolves. Anhder has had success with the Bobcats and now gets an opportunity to start new records with the Wolves.

“It’s kind of like taking your family and splitting it in half,” Anhder said during a previous interview in late September. “Maybe that’s an extreme example, but it’s going to be hard. There are going to be kids that I’ve built relationships with that are going to be staying at Sky View while I go to Green Canyon.”

Sky View Boys Basketball

Sky View Principal Mike Monson has announced that current Bobcat boys basketball coach Kirk Hillyard will remain at that position. Hillyard graduated from Sky View in 1989 and has been their head coach for several years. Hillyard won a state basketball championship in 2013 with current Aggie standout Jalen Moore.

The new head coach for the inaugural season of the Green Canyon Wolves will be Dan McClure. McClure is stepped down as the head basketball coach at Roy this past spring. Last season Roy finished 6-15 overall and 3-9 in Region 1 play. According to an article in the Standard Examiner, McClure said he stepped down because he had been coaching for 13 straight years and needed a break.

It wasn’t much time off.

On his Twitter account earlier this month, McClure announced that he would be taking the head coaching job at Green Canyon next season.

“I am very, very excited. I felt like this was a great opportunity for me professionally and for my family,” he wrote.

“I have mixed emotions for sure,” he continued. “I have absolutely loved my eight years at Roy. Some of my all-time favorite people are Royals. Thank you for making me love my job.”

Meet the Coaches Night

Parents and students are invited to attend a “Meet the Coaches Night” for each high school coming up in early December. Green Canyon High School’s event will be December 5th at Cedar Ridge Middle School and will begin at 6:30 p.m. Students and parents interested in meeting with the Sky View coaches can do that on Wednesday, December 7th at 6:30 at Sky View.

Students who will be seniors next year, and live within the Green Canyon boundaries, are given the option to choose where they would like to complete their high school education: finish at Sky View where they started, or be the first graduating class at Green Canyon. That decision does not need to be made until January.
