Trooper hospitalized in critical condition after accident near Garland

A Utah Highway Patrol trooper was severely injured and hospitalized Friday night, after being hit by a vehicle while trying to direct traffic.

Lt. Lee Perry said trooper Eric Ellsworth was responding to a downed power line along SR-13 near Garland City around 9:45 p.m. He reportedly exited his patrol vehicle and was attempting to slow traffic when he was struck by a vehicle that was traveling southbound.

Ellsworth sustained severe injuries and was transported by helicopter to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray. He is currently listed in extremely critical condition.

The identity of the driver who hit Ellsworth has not been released. The Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash. The cause of the accident is still be determined.

Ellsworth has been a trooper for seven-years. He is currently assigned to Section 1 and patrols Box Elder County.
