As a member of the Logan City Council, Herm Olsen was sad last week when a woman reported that she was moving away from Logan because the bad air from the winter inversions was hurting her daughter’s health.
Olsen says, unfortunately, the air in Cache Valley is not pure this time of year but there are things we can do to make it less dirty.
“Doing things like idling for five minutes outside of school, or three minutes outside of a store,” were some of the suggestions offered by Olsen. “It isn’t a huge contribution to the dirty air, but it is a contribution.
“It seems to me that if we can get hundreds of people, and thousands of people, and tens of thousands of cars in our valley to turn off when they’re not going anywhere then we’re going to be striking a blow for healthier air.”
Olsen says idling is actually selfish because it is damaging people who are in fragile categories, like young people, the elderly and those with respiratory problems. He says we have a great resource in Cache Valley in that there is a free bus to ride and people should think about utilizing that resource at least once a week, instead of driving a car.
