Young women from Hyrum who are juniors or seniors in high school are invited to apply to participate in the 2017 Hyrum City Royalty Pageant, which will take place Jan. 28, at 7:00 p.m. at the Hyrum Civic Center. Applications are due Dec. 30, before 5:00 p.m. and should be submitted to the Hyrum City Office, located at 60 W. Main.
“This pageant gives the girls an opportunity to serve the community and develop life skills,” said council member Kathy Bingham, who coordinates the event. “The girls who have participated in the past have really enjoyed it, and they just help us so much. It’s been a lot of fun.”
Beginning at 9:00 a.m. the morning of the pageant, contestants will participate in a workshop designed to help them prepare for their evening interviews and develop poise onstage. During the pageant itself, participants will be judged in four categories:

Interview (30 points)

Self-presentation/Biography (20 points)

Impromptu Questions (30 points)

Talent Performance or Display (20 points)

Once winners have been selected, they will represent Hyrum City throughout 2017, participating in parades and assisting with special events, including a patriotic program on the Sunday before July 4, and during Hyrum City’s annual Independence Day celebration on City Square.
While winners in past pageants have included a queen and attendants, a change for 2017 will involve the discontinuation of selecting a specific queen. Instead, each member of Hyrum City royalty will be considered a “princess” of equal status.
“All of the girls are wonderful and beautiful, and there doesn’t need to be a queen,” said Bingham. “These girls are so darn cute, and I’ve loved them all.”
