Winter storm hits Utah, snarling traffic but slowing floods

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A major winter storm is having a mixed effect in Utah, where it has contributed to fatal crashes but also slowed floodwaters on the Wasatch Front.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/2mpbrAU ) that ice and snow snarled the Thursday morning commute in northern Utah and caused two fatal crashes the night before. Utah Highway Patrol troopers had responded to more than 50 storm-related crashes in Salt Lake, Weber and Utah counties by 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

Daytime temperatures plunged from nearly 60 degrees earlier this week to hover around the freezing point on Thursday, with overnight lows expected to be in the upper teens. The cooler temperatures are good news for Box Elder, Cache and Weber Counties, where unusually warm weather has led to mudslides and flooded yards and basements.
