USU students spend spring break building a home for wheelchair bound family in Mexico

Sixteen members of USU's Rotaract Club will spend spring break building an adobe brick home in Agua Prieta, Mexico. They are accompanied by members of the Logan Rotary Club.

For the last 13 years The Rotary Club of Logan, Utah has partnered with the Wings of Angels Foundation to coordinate an annual trip for the Rotaractor’s service project in the Sonoran region of Mexico.

Once again the Rotaract Club at Utah State University, the collegiate affiliate of Rotary International and sponsored by the Rotary Club of Logan, Utah, spent their spring break (March 3-8) in Agua Prieta, Mexico. In three days, 16 USU students, along with several members of the Rotary Club of Logan, built an adobe brick addition on the home of a mother and daughter who are both wheelchair bound. The project added 260 square feet and doubled the size of their home.

In addition to this year’s construction project, a repurposed ambulance was delivered to Cruz Roja Mexican of Agua Prieta. The ambulance was donated to the Rotary Club of Logan, Utah by the Cache County EMS Authority. The Rotary Club invested several thousand dollars to refurbish the vehicle and was able to equip it with $4,000 worth of medical supplies from Globus Relief in Salt Lake City. This is the fourth ambulance the Logan Rotary Club has delivered to Agua Prieta over the last 13 years.

The Logan Rotary Club is grateful for all that Wings of Angels Foundation does for the community of Agua Prieta and its surrounding areas and glad they can be of a little assistance in making a few lives a more comfortable. Dorothea Watkins, Wings of Angels CEO and Marcelino Enriques, chief contractor, have been steadfast in all they do for Wings of Angels Foundation and in teaching Rotaractors how to lay brick, build walls, add roofs…all that’s needed to create a warm, secure dwelling. The experiences have bettered the lives of many both north and south of the border.
